Home Insurance - Flood & Storm Damage Advice

04 December 2009

We have all seen recently the grim pictures of families returning to their homes to view the damage which has been caused by flooding. Insurance companies know that we can’t control the weather but they do have an expectation that we should all make an effort to protect our homes as much as possible.

It makes sense that all homeowners remain aware of the risk of flooding and storm damage. Keeping an eye on the weather forecast for your area is recommended. If you are already in a Flood Risk Area, you will be well aware of the difficulties in seeking out home insurance, as well as the increase in your premiums.

Should Disaster Strike

In the event of your home being potentially affected by flooding, it is important to take some necessary precautions to prevent as much damage as possible to your home.

  • Make sure all moveable items on the ground floor level are either removed from the property to a safe place or are put higher up in the property, such as in the loft.
  • Get into the habit of keeping important documents in a safe, dry place. This will help you in the event of a claim as you will have all the relevant information to hand.
  • Make sure you have all the necessary emergency equipment for your family, for example - candles, batteries, spare clothes, first aid kit and a stock of food/water.
Making a Claim

As soon as you know that your property has been damaged, get in touch with your insurance company. They will guide you through the process of making a claim and also act quickly so further damage is prevented. Taking photographs of the damage caused to your home helps insurance companies see the damage at first hand. Don’t be tempted to throw away items that have been damaged as the insurance company may need to see them to help assess the claim. Once a claim is in place, never carry out any repair work without prior consent from your insurance company.

It is also important that, after a flood, your property is dried out completely. Dependent on the scale of the damage, this can take from a few weeks to several months. If you are not able to stay in your home, your insurance company should be able to arrange temporary alternative accommodation until your home is fully repaired.

If your insurance has been set up by a broker, remember they are also on hand to help you manage your claim.
