Official Opening of New Highland Archive Centre
24 November 2009
The new Highland Archive & Registration Centre at Bught Road, Inverness was officially opened by Prince Edward on Monday 23rd November.
The Highland Council Archive Service holds the records for the former county councils of Sutherland, Ross & Cromarty, Inverness-shire and Nairnshire dating from 1890 and the eleven burghs within those counties, the earliest of which dates from 1455. Some of the archive records available include Business and Solicitors records, maps and plans of the area, Sasine registers and Will registers.
The £10.5 million centre includes an archive conservation unit, a dedicated family history centre and a ceremony suite. The installation of specialist atmospheric and environmental controls has allowed the return of archives to the Highlands which had previously been stored in Edinburgh.
The registration of births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships will also now be administered from this main central office in the Highland Capital. For more information on other local registration offices, please see the Highland Council’s website.
